About the Blinker

An Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour and sparkling whiskey highball in a warm library bar.

Raspberry before grenadine

Printed versions from the 1930s call for raspberry syrup, and the recipe is usually traced to Patrick Gavin Duffy's mixing manual. Grenadine took over later, largely because it was the thing people could actually buy. Either way the drink went unread for decades and only came back around when cocktail historians started reprinting the old books.

Grapefruit dates this more than the whiskey does. It was a fashionable ingredient at the time, and nobody writing then was measuring the sugar in their fruit, which is why the recipe survives being adjusted. Taste the juice, move the sweetener, leave the 60 ml of rye where it is.

Common questions

Blinker FAQ

Grapefruit is loud. Does the rye actually come through?

At 60 ml against 30 of juice it does, provided it has some proof behind it. A 40 percent rye gets swamped; something in the 45 to 50 percent range keeps its pepper and its dry finish. This is a good home for a bottle you find too aggressive to drink neat.

My grapefruit was punishing. How much grenadine then?

Go to 20 ml, and taste the juice before you pour rather than after. Grapefruit varies wildly from fruit to fruit, so 15 ml is a starting point and not a rule. Plain sugar syrup in 5 ml steps also works, though it thins out the color.

What does raspberry syrup do in place of grenadine?

It is the older reading of the drink and the brighter one. Raspberry brings acidity and a jammier fruit; pomegranate is deeper and slightly tannic. Both sit well with rye. Commercial raspberry syrups tend to be sweeter than grenadine, so start at 10 ml and work up.

Does it work as a long drink with soda?

Very well. Same measures over ice in a tall glass with 60 to 90 ml of soda on top turns it into something for the afternoon rather than before dinner. Add 5 ml more grenadine when you do, because dilution flattens the fruit before it flattens the whiskey.

What ingredients are in a Blinker?

A classic Blinker calls for 60 ml (2 oz) Rye whiskey, 30 ml (1 oz) Grapefruit juice, 15 ml (0.5 oz) Grenadine. That single-serve spec scales cleanly — the recipe above converts it to oz and multiplies it for 2–4 drinks.

How strong is a Blinker?

A standard Blinker is roughly 26% ABV once mixed (before ice melt softens it further). That makes it spirit-forward — closer to a Martini than to a beer, so sip it slowly.

Is a Blinker shaken or stirred?

A Blinker is shaken. About 13 seconds with plenty of ice chills and dilutes it correctly.
