Mocktails
A good mocktail is a real drink, not a consolation prize. These recipes use the same technique as their spirited cousins — proper muddling, fresh citrus, real balance — so drivers, kids and anyone skipping alcohol get something genuinely worth ordering.

Every drink here is completely alcohol-free. If you’re mixing for a party, the planner can blend these into the same shopping list as the cocktails.

Virgin Mojito
All the lift of a mojito, none of the rum: mint and lime muddled with sugar, packed with crushed ice and topped with soda. Cool, green and endlessly refreshing.

Shirley Temple
The original kids’-table classic: a splash of grenadine under lemon-lime soda, finished with a cherry. Sweet, pink and nostalgic.

Roy Rogers
The Shirley Temple’s cola-drinking cousin: grenadine stirred through cola over ice, topped with a cherry.

Virgin Piña Colada
Beach holiday in a glass, no rum required: pineapple juice and coconut cream over crushed ice. Thick, creamy and tropical.

Virgin Mary
A Bloody Mary with the vodka left out — all the savoury, spiced tomato flavour, none of the alcohol. The brunch drink for everyone.

Cinderella
A classic three-juice mocktail: orange, pineapple and lemon with a touch of grenadine and a splash of soda. Bright and fruity.

Pussyfoot
A citrus cooler from the temperance era: orange, lemon and lime sweetened with a little grenadine. Sharp, sunny and simple.

Fresh Lemonade
Proper homemade lemonade: fresh lemon and sugar lengthened with soda over plenty of ice. Tart, cloudy and better than anything from a bottle.

Cranberry Cooler
Almost every bottle labeled cranberry on a supermarket shelf is a sweetened juice cocktail, which is why this often reads soft rather than sharp. Track down the unsweetened kind and the lime and soda suddenly have something to push against.

Tropical Fruit Punch
A crowd-pleasing party punch: orange, pineapple and cranberry with grenadine and a lift of lemon-lime soda. Fruity, fizzy and family-friendly.

Virgin Sea Breeze
Take the vodka out of a Sea Breeze and surprisingly little goes missing. Cranberry and grapefruit were always the ones doing the talking, one tart and one faintly bitter, and without the spirit underneath they read cleaner and a good deal drier.

Virgin Sunrise
A Tequila Sunrise without the tequila: orange juice over ice with a sink of grenadine bleeding up from the bottom. As pretty as it is easy.

Raspberry Lemonade
Two sweeteners in one glass looks like a mistake until you taste it. Raspberry syrup carries perfume and color but not much sugar weight, so a little plain syrup fills in underneath and stops the lemon cutting straight through the fruit.

Orange Fizz
Ripe fruit is the whole recipe. Juice from a good Valencia in season needs no sugar at all, while a tired supermarket navel will taste thin and faintly bitter no matter how much soda goes in on top of it.

Mint Lemonade
A Middle-Eastern summer staple: lemon and mint muddled together with sugar and lengthened with soda. Astonishingly cooling.

Grapefruit Spritz
Eight milliliters of syrup is not there to sweeten anything. It exists to take the hard edge off grapefruit's bitterness so the soda has something to lift, which is why this drinks dry and slightly bracing instead of like fruit juice.
