About the Nuclear Daiquiri

Credited to a London bar
Mid-2000s London gets the credit for this one, usually pointed at Gregor de Gruyther, who was working behind bars in Soho at the time. It belongs to the wave of drinks that put Chartreuse into everything, and it survived because the arithmetic holds up: overproof rum needs a partner loud enough to be heard, and a liqueur built on some 130 botanicals qualifies.
Common questions
Nuclear Daiquiri FAQ
How strong is this next to a standard Daiquiri?
About half again as much alcohol, in a smaller glass. Overproof Jamaican rum runs 63 percent and green Chartreuse 55, so the spirit here carries around 36 ml of pure alcohol against a normal Daiquiri's 24. Drink it slowly and do not build a second on autopilot.
Will yellow Chartreuse hold up against overproof rum?
Barely. At 40 percent and considerably sweeter, it gets steamrollered by rum at 63. If it is what you have, push it to 22 ml, drop the honey entirely and add a few more drops of lime. Pleasant drink, but the herbal bite this one is named for goes missing.
Do I need Wray & Nephew specifically?
Any overproof Jamaican does the job, Rum Fire and Rum-Bar included. Standard 40 percent white rum makes a thinner, sweeter version; if that is all you have, go to 60 ml of rum and pull the honey back to 5 ml so it does not turn flabby.
Why honey syrup rather than plain sugar?
Honey has weight and a waxy floral note that meets Chartreuse halfway, where plain sugar simply gets flattened. Cut it three parts honey to one part warm water first, though. Neat honey seizes the moment it hits cold lime juice and ends up in a lump at the bottom of the tin.
What ingredients are in a Nuclear Daiquiri?
A classic Nuclear Daiquiri calls for 45 ml (1.5 oz) Overproof rum, 15 ml (0.5 oz) Green Chartreuse, 22 ml (0.75 oz) Fresh lime juice, 8 ml (0.25 oz) Honey syrup. That single-serve spec scales cleanly — the recipe above converts it to oz and multiplies it for 2–4 drinks.
Is a Nuclear Daiquiri shaken or stirred?
A Nuclear Daiquiri is shaken — the rule of thumb is to shake anything with citrus juice. About 13 seconds with plenty of ice chills and dilutes it correctly.
What glass do you serve a Nuclear Daiquiri in?
Serve a Nuclear Daiquiri in a chilled coupe glass, well chilled — this drink is served without ice, so a cold glass keeps it cold.
