Sloe Comfortable Screw

A liqueur, not a gin. Sloe berries steep in gin with sugar for months until the spirit turns deep red and tastes of plum skin and almond. Most bottles land between 15 and 25 percent, so it softens the glass rather than strengthening it.

It's sold as a liqueur, flavored with fruit and spice, and the recipe has been reformulated more than once over the years. Whatever is in the current bottle, it behaves like sweet peach and cinnamon rather than bourbon, and it needs acid standing next to it.

Galliano, floated on top, bringing vanilla and anise. That move is borrowed straight from the Harvey Wallbanger, and the naming ladder keeps climbing from there. Every extra word in one of these titles stands for one more bottle somebody tipped in.

Sloe gin. Its plum tartness is what stops 90 ml of orange juice flattening into plain sweet juice, and Southern Comfort mostly stacks peach and sugar on top of that. Pour 30 ml of sloe gin with the vodka and leave the rest out. The other way round gives you a soft, one-note glass.

A classic Sloe Comfortable Screw calls for 22 ml (0.75 oz) Sloe gin, 22 ml (0.75 oz) Southern Comfort, 22 ml (0.75 oz) Vodka, 90 ml (3 oz) Orange juice. That single-serve spec scales cleanly — the recipe above converts it to oz and multiplies it for 2–4 drinks.

A standard Sloe Comfortable Screw is roughly 14% ABV once mixed (before ice melt softens it further). That makes it about as strong as a glass of wine.
