Tequila Fix

Start making

Crushed ice, a full 60 ml of tequila, lemon rather than the expected lime, and a maraschino dose you could measure in drops. Older than the Margarita by the better part of a century, and colder than almost anything else on the list.

About the Tequila Fix

A salt-rimmed Margarita, coral Paloma and mezcal rocks drink on an agave terrace.

What makes a Fix

Fixes turn up in Jerry Thomas's 1862 bar manual alongside the fizzes and the cobblers: spirit, lemon, sugar, a heap of shaved ice and some fruit stuck in the top. Nobody was pouring tequila into them then, since brandy, gin and Santa Cruz rum were the working bases, but the format takes any spirit with enough character to survive that much melting ice.

Common questions

Tequila Fix FAQ

Does an aged tequila fight the maraschino?

It blurs it. Reposado brings vanilla and light oak, which sit in the same place as the maraschino's almond note, and the two run together into general sweetness. A blanco leaves the cherry as a separate thing you can taste and keeps the pepper up front. With reposado, take the maraschino down to 2 ml.

Four milliliters of maraschino seems like nothing. Can I add more?

Taste it first. Maraschino is loud, nutty and almost savory, and by 10 ml it stops being a background note and becomes the flavor everyone identifies. If you want more cherry without that, add a bar spoon of syrup from a jar of good cocktail cherries.

Should the tequila go in the freezer first?

No need, and it costs you something. Crushed ice drops the temperature fast enough on its own, and agave aroma goes numb straight out of the freezer: the pepper and the green note are the reason you're pouring tequila rather than vodka. Chill the glass instead, and leave the bottle in the cupboard.

Why lemon here instead of the usual lime?

Lemon is softer and less floral, which leaves room for the maraschino to register. Lime plus agave plus cherry starts tasting like fruit punch. Swap it if you prefer, but nudge the syrup up a milliliter or two, because lime bites harder.

What ingredients are in a Tequila Fix?

A classic Tequila Fix calls for 60 ml (2 oz) Tequila, 15 ml (0.5 oz) Fresh lemon juice, 8 ml (0.25 oz) Simple syrup, 4 ml (0.25 oz) Maraschino liqueur. That single-serve spec scales cleanly — the recipe above converts it to oz and multiplies it for 2–4 drinks.

How strong is a Tequila Fix?

A standard Tequila Fix is roughly 29% ABV once mixed (before ice melt softens it further). That makes it spirit-forward — closer to a Martini than to a beer, so sip it slowly.

Is a Tequila Fix shaken or stirred?

A Tequila Fix is stirred, not shaken. It contains no citrus juice, so stirring keeps it crystal clear and silky instead of cloudy and aerated.
